Introduction

Cellular Automata (CA) are discrete, spatially extended dynamic systems. CA include a regular lattice of cells, each having an internal state with value that belongs to a finite state set. These values conform a configuration of CA, which evolves in discrete time steps. Cell state at each step is determined as a function of its previous state and previous states of cells forming its neighborhood. Generally, CA are assumed to be discrete in both space and time, homogeneous in space and time (same update rule at all cells at all times) and local in their interactions.

CA are powerful tools for modelling systems with complex interactions. They are employed in quite different fields that include molecular dynamics, laminar and turbulent flows, diffusion-reaction processes, and others.

Energy Driven Cellular Automata (EDCA) paradigm introduces a general procedure for constructing a CA with additional conservative properties. Extra attributes related to energy restrictions are intended to allow a substantial expansion of CA modelling capabilities, which assures the creation of models better adjusted to the real physics of studied phenomena.
